RAFAEL NADAL has packed his bags and gone home to Spain. He left behind question marks about his future.
Knocked out of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the O² Arena, Nadal departed giving the impression of a man who has suddenly become tired of tennis.
“I have lost a little passion for the game,” he said. “I have been a bit more tired than usual.”
For Nadal to admit the flames within him, normally as fierce as a forest fire, have become mere glowing embers is testament to how his troubled year has finally got to him.
He lost his beloved Wimbledon title and his place as world No1. Then, Novak Djokovic completed a hat-trick by defeating him in the US Open final.
There are rumours of a rift with uncle Toni, the man who has been his faithful second in his corner for all of his career. And there is speculation of turmoil in his personal life, within the close-knit family.
